This is one of the few castles that the French did manage to capture. It was one of three English castle's taken by the Dauphin in 1216, the others being Reigate and Farnham.
Guildford Castle is a foundation of Saxon times, but it was rebuilt shortly after the Norman Conquest. What we look at today in a picturesque setting surrounded by colourful gardens, is what remains of an early 12th century castle with a virtually square tower built on the site of an old motte.
The castle has had a varied history, at one time it was used as a prison, and looking at the strong walls today, it is easy to imagine the fear of the prisoners being led towards this once daunting building.
The imposing walls of Guildford Castle can be found just a short walk from the centre of the town. The grounds are open daily, and the castle is open to visitors from April to September.
